ShellNames

Readable Forest aliases for signed Shell identities. They are not accounts, DNS, legal identity, or ownership claims.

What A ShellName Means

A ShellName like @creator@forest.postsnail.org points to a public PostSnail signing key and public microblog URL. The public key remains the real identity; the alias is only a readable discovery name.

Claim In Identity

Unlock the publisher key, enter a Forest URL and desired lowercase name, then claim the ShellName. PostSnail signs the public record locally and sends only that public record to Forest.

Update And Renew

The same signing key can update or renew the ShellName. Alpha 2 uses one active ShellName per public key and one-year expiry.

Public Proof Metadata

Accepted ShellName records are stored in the encrypted Shell and may appear as optional public metadata in the manifest and well-known identity document.
